One of scariest events that can occur in the life of an individual is seeing a car approaching on the wrong side of the freeway. Several years ago, I represented two young women who were passengers in a car faced with this very real event along the westbound 101 freeway. The young female driver of their vehicle had little time to react when the drunk wrong way driver suddenly appeared from the opposite side of a car that barely escaped a head on collision itself. Unfortunately, the driver of my client’s vehicle perished in the catastrophic impact and my clients suffered significant injuries.
This tragic event was back to the forefront of my memory when I read about a similarly tragic event on December 7, 2012, along the I-15 freeway near Bear Valley Road in Victorville, California. Unlike my clients, this accident happened during daylight hours at just after 7:30 a.m. After the CHP arrived on the accident scene, they found a 1994 Cherokee Jeep and a 2007 Mazda RX3 had collided on the southbound lanes of the I-15 freeway. In this accident, the passenger of the Cherokee, Kellie Hughes, of Pinon Hills sustained fatal injuries from the collision. The drivers of both vehicles suffered injuries and were taken to local hospitals. The driver of the wrong way vehicle was traveling at 100 mph and was under the influence of drugs.
The question is why are there cars driving on the wrong side of the freeway. Many of these occasions arise from drunk drivers, but they also occur when a driver is too old to recognize his/her error or when one is too tired to properly operate a vehicle. All too often, like these two situations, a wrong way freeway accident results in the death of one or more people in the accident and certainly injuries to those in the collision.
