Ontario, California Bicyclist Passes Away After a Hit and Run Accident

On Sunday, November 17, 2013, an Ontario, California bicyclist lost his life as a result of a cowardly hit and run driver. According to the report by the Daily Bulletin, following the hit and run incident, the driver was caught after a short police chase. One reason the hit and run driver was caught was because witnesses to the collision cared enough to get involved and called 9-1-1 and reported the accident.

Bicyclists are at high risk of injury from traffic collisions. Even when bicyclists do everything they are supposed to do when riding their bikes, they can suffer serious injuries and even death as a result of negligent or drunk drivers. The injuries and medical expenses associated with bicycle collisions with cars can often be life altering and overwhelmingly expensive. So besides trying to recover from their injuries or the loss of a loved one, the individual and their families are going to be dealing with the financial impact, now and in the future. Unfortunately, no one can reverse the actual events that led to the accident, only help comes from minimizing the extent of the loss.

These injuries and death claims often become extremely complicated. Those complications arise from proving the cause of the accident, to finding all sources of financial recovery for the victim and his or her family. Bicyclists have some real challenges in recovering the sufficient compensation for the losses suffered. One of the challenges comes from finding the source of available insurance coverage. In most bicycle accidents, the only source of financial recovery may be from the insurance coverage purchased by the driver who hit the bicyclist, and/or any medical insurance maintained by the bicyclist. Another source of insurance may be from uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage the bicyclist, or his or her family, may have for their cars. A final insurance source may be if the driver was operating a vehicle for an employer or for another person.

Regardless of the issues involved in an auto v. bicycle accident, the injured victim needs a quality, experienced personal injury lawyer that can help maximize the potential return to normalcy following an accident.
