The First Major Seasonal Rain is Often the Most Dangerous

On September 15, 2015, rain soaked Southern California highways, were especially dangerous for our local drivers, resulting in many serious accidents as well as many simple fender bender collisions all across the Inland Empire. Often, the first serious rain of the season is one of the most dangerous. Why is that true? It is true because during the summer, the roads accumulated oils, dirt, dust and debris. Then with the heavy rain, this debris is washed loose from the road surface with a hard rain and with the traffic moving the water back and forth like a washing machine drawing the dirt for clothing. As this debris is mixed with the water, the roads become extraordinarily slippery, thereby increasing the chances for accidents. Later rains are not as slick because the loose layers of debris are washed away by the first rain.

The second reason the first rain of the season is so dangerous has to do with driving habits. When the roads are clear and dry, drivers tend to drive at higher speeds. Upon the first rain, drivers have not adjusted their speeds to the dangers posed by the wet, slick roadways. The higher speeds increase the inability to control a car when tires hit a puddle or a slippery curve in the road.

What prevents accidents during the first rain storm of the season? Here are a few suggestions to keep you safe:

1. At the end of August, or before the first rain, check your tires, windshield wipers and brakes to make sure they are all in top operating condition.

2. Give yourself some extra time to arrive at your destination as compared to your normal summer driving time.

3. Reduce your speed.

4. Be very aware of the road conditions and the possibilities of where there might be accumulated water that can cause hydroplaning or loss of traction.

5. Make sure you provide extra distance between your car and those around you in order to adjust to the uncertainty of actions by other drivers on the road.
